Volunteer Experience

I’m volunteering in the Emergency Room at Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg, VA, where I interact with the patients, listen to medical discussions, and learn medical vocabulary. My role is multifaceted, ranging from patient registration to maintaining a conducive environment for patient care and recovery. Additionally, I helped reorganize the supply inventory system, ensuring that medical staff have the essential tools readily available for patient care. By assisting with patient registration and room preparation, I contributed to the efficient management of emergency care, a vital community service.

Volunteering at the hospital helped me develop problem-solving techniques, apply theoretical understanding in practical settings, and understand the dynamics of healthcare environments. Participating in these hospital activities has also helped me understand the value of empathy and compassion in the medical field, as I witnessed the profound impact these human elements have on patient recovery and comfort.

Also, I realized that communication skills, both speaking and listening, are very important characteristics for a doctor. It was a great experience learning more about healthcare professionals and how to get involved in a medical career. Interacting with diverse people from different backgrounds has allowed me to exchange ideas and learn about their cultures and traditions. Listening to the doctors talk to the patients and treat them motivated me to become a doctor.
